Shoulder Pain Treatment Sydney CBD

The shoulder relies on muscle balance more than any other joint, so pain there is usually a movement problem rather than a single damaged structure. We assess the rotator cuff, shoulder blade control and upper back, then combine hands-on treatment with specific strengthening.

How we treat shoulder pain

Assessment looks at how your shoulder blade moves on the rib cage, rotator cuff strength, upper back mobility and neck involvement, because shoulder pain is often referred from the neck. On the day we use remedial massage and myofascial release through the rotator cuff, pectorals and upper back, dry needling for trigger points in the shoulder girdle, and red light therapy over irritable tendons.

The lasting fix is almost always strength and control. Exercise therapy progresses from scapular control to rotator cuff loading to overhead work, matched to your sport or job.

Common patterns we see

Desk workers with rounded shoulders and pain reaching behind the back, lifters with pinching on overhead press, swimmers and tennis players with overuse tendinitis, and people over 40 with the gradual stiffness of a frozen shoulder.

Shoulder conditions: symptoms and causes

ConditionCommon symptomsCommon causes
Rotator cuff tendinitisShoulder pain, especially with overhead movements, weakness, limited range of motion, clicking or popping sounds.Overuse or repetitive movements, ageing, poor posture, shoulder impingement, sports injuries, lifting heavy objects.
Shoulder impingement syndromeShoulder pain when reaching overhead or behind the back, weakness, stiffness, pain at night.Compression of the rotator cuff tendons and bursa between the acromion and the humerus, repetitive overhead activity, poor posture, muscle imbalances.
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)Gradual onset of shoulder pain and stiffness, limited range of motion, difficulty reaching behind the back or overhead.Inflammation and thickening of the shoulder joint capsule leading to adhesions, often idiopathic but associated with diabetes, shoulder injury or surgery.
Shoulder instabilityA feeling of the shoulder slipping out of place, pain with certain movements, a sense of looseness.Traumatic injury such as dislocation, repetitive overhead activity such as throwing, ligament laxity, muscle weakness, structural abnormalities.
Shoulder bursitisShoulder pain with overhead movements, tenderness, swelling, warmth over the affected area.Inflammation of the bursa in the shoulder joint from repetitive overhead activity, direct trauma, or underlying conditions such as arthritis.

General information only. It does not replace a diagnosis. Seek urgent medical care for pain after significant trauma, or pain with fever, numbness, weakness, or changes to bladder or bowel function.

Shoulder pain FAQs

Can massage help a frozen shoulder?

Massage and myofascial work can ease the muscle guarding around a frozen shoulder and help you keep the movement you have, while graded exercise maintains range through the stages of the condition. Recovery is usually slow, so we plan treatment around that.

Do I need a scan before I come in?

Not usually. A hands-on assessment tells us a lot about which structures are involved. If findings suggest a tear or instability that needs imaging, we will say so and point you to your GP.
